Infiltration/Inflow Services - Helping Create A Blueprint For City Expansion

This photo is of two Wallace Group employees, Ed Hale and L.D. Mayes, setting up a portable flow meter in a 36-inch wastewater collection system line. This City of Waco project includes analyzing a portion of the sanitary sewer system to see if it can accommodate upcoming growth. A furniture manufacturer in Waco has purchased land to expand the business. However, that land has a 15-inch wastewater collection line running across it. In order to build, the 15-inch line needs to be relocated. The Wallace Group is flow metering the 15-inch line along with a 30-inch line and a 36-inch line, both being near enough to tie onto. If the 30-inch or the 36-inch line can handle the additional flow from the 15-inch line, then the 15-inch line can be relocated.

As part of the flow meter setup, it is necessary to enter the manhole and install a 36-inch diameter stainless steel band and sensor in the pipe approximately 1 foot away from the manhole. Sliding the band and sensor into the pipe helps reduce interference that might occur in the manhole. The flow meter senses the pressure of the wastewater above it (head pressure) and the speed of the wastewater as it passes (velocity). These two readings are sent to the master unit (suspended in the manhole) where they are stored for later retrieval via laptop computer.

Much care and precaution is taken during the I/I investigation. Since a manhole is classified as a "confined space", special safety precautions are used. All such entries require a minimum of two people. One to enter the manhole and one to remain outside for emergencies. A tripod with special safety rated wrenches is used to lower and raise the entry person into and out of the manhole. A multi-gases monitor is also used to test the air inside the manhole.

After retrieval of the data, analysis begins. Our engineers will utilize all the data collected, along with the system modeling to analyze the appropriate alternatives. A prioritized implementation plan and maintenance program will be developed and delivered to the City of Waco.
